Course Overview

During this course students will learn wood working, metal working and casting skills built around the fundementals of contemporary sculpture.

From the basics of design and three-dimensional composition to contemporary concerns in art making coupled with fundamental skills of wood and metal working, casting and some digital sculpting methods students will gain hands on experience that will crossover with other fields of interest such as architecture, engineering, science, etc.  

This course is part of Summer College Studio Art Academy, an enrichment and community-building program offered through Syracuse University’s School of Art, part of the College of Visual and Performing Arts (VPA). 

All students who successfully complete the course will receive a Certificate of Completion and have the opportunity to request a Syracuse University credit transcript.

Eligibility: Students must be of rising high school sophomore*, junior, or senior status – or a 2023 high school graduate. 

*Rising sophomores are only eligible for the noncredit version of this course.

Credit: 3 credits** or Noncredit

**Prospective students wishing to take the course for college credit are required to submit a sample portfolio of 3-5 images of current artwork formatted in a single pdf document. Please include name, date, title, and dimensions. Images in the sample portfolio do not need to be in the medium of the course to be taken but should emphasize creativity and technical accomplishment.

Tentative Schedule

The day will start with an introduction to the fundamentals of these various processes in both a practical and artistic methods. Students will get a hands on break down of these tools and how they work. They will then spend the afternoons executing and practicing these skills to develop artistic creations.

Instructor Bio

Jeremy Tarr – Instructor in the School of Art at Syracuse University

Jeremy Tarr was born in 1989 to a blue collar family and raised in the working class neighborhoods of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. His undergraduate education is in printmaking and sculpture. Tarr received his MFA in Studio Art at Syracuse University Visual and Performing Arts, Syracuse, NY in 2019. Since then Tarr has shown nationally and internationally at Monte Vista Projects in Los Angeles, and has been an artist in residence at the Axel Haubrok Fahrbereitschaft in Berlin, Germany, Governors Island New York, NY and has a forthcoming double solo show at York College of Pennsylvania opening August 2022.

Jeremy Tarr lives and works in Syracuse, New York where he is an instructor at Syracuse University teaching Sculpture, Digital Fabrication, Foundations and was appointed Pedagogy Facilitator serving on the Undergraduate and Graduate Committees. Jeremy’s work deals with the decay in post industrial settings and the new myths and narratives that arise in their place. At the core of his practice he questions when and how emptiness begins to accumulate weight. He is an interdisciplinary artist working across various mediums in performance, video, sound, sculpture, and photography.

In his spare time you can find Jeremy in his studio, fishing, watching hockey, tattooing, playing with dogs, banging on musical instruments and stoking the campfire until it’s too hot.
