Course Overview

In this course, students will conceptualize a podcast and learn how to record correctly and edit their podcast. Students will also learn how to make their podcast conversational, along with how to properly market, advertise, and sponsor them. “Podcast Primer” is an amalgamation of the courses that have been taught for Syracuse University’s Newhouse School of Public Communications since 2019.

All students who successfully complete the course will receive a Certificate of Completion and have the opportunity to request a Syracuse University noncredit transcript.

Required Supplies/Knowledge

Please know that any supply purchases are not included in the overall tuition fee. Students will need to budget for additional course supplies, textbooks, supply kits, etc.

It is recommended that students bring a laptop.

Throughout the course, students will be utilizing one of Newhouse’s recording studios specifically designed for podcasts to conceptualize their podcasts.

There will be an end even open to parents and other guests at the end of this course.

Faculty Bio

Seth Everett

Newhouse alumnus Seth Everett returned to the school in 2019 to teach an elective course on podcasting. He currently broadcasts nationally for iHeartMedia and is the host/owner of two successful podcasts.

Everett has broadcasted in Denver, Seattle, New York, and nationally. He covered numerous sports teams, including the Denver Broncos, Seattle Mariners, Philadelphia Phillies, and New York Mets. He was at ESPN, where he hosted “”Baseball Tonight”” and a New York-based radio show. He worked for Major League Baseball for eight years, and FOX Sports Radio for nearly a decade.

Everett’s podcasts include “”Sports with Friends,”” a weekly show featuring athletes, broadcasters, reporters and others from his quarter-century-long career, and “”Hall of Justice,”” which takes an adult look at the booming superhero genre, with actors, writers, and directors joining in.
