Course Overview

This pre-college course is designed to equip aspiring media professionals with the essential skills and knowledge to succeed in the fast-paced world of news and media. Through a combination of expert instruction, hands-on projects, and industry insights, you’ll learn how to navigate your college journey, build a strong professional brand, and land your dream job.

All students who successfully complete the course will receive a Certificate of Completion and have the opportunity to request a Syracuse University noncredit transcript.

Learning Objectives

By the end of the course, students will be able to:

  • Plan Your Media Career Journey.
  • Develop actionable steps to gain experience in high school, including identifying opportunities for collaborations, securing internships, and leveraging school or community resources.
  • Build a Media Portfolio.
  • Learn how to create a standout portfolio showcasing media projects and content that align with your interests and career goals, tailored for college applications or internships.
  • Create a Professional Online Presence.
  • Learn how to maintain a professional social media and online presence.
  • Understand the Media Landscape.
  • Identify key trends, roles, and opportunities in various media fields (e.g., journalism, film, digital media, social media management, sports broadcasting).

Summer College – On Campus: Experience what college is really like: take a college-level course, live in a residence hall, have meals with friends in a dining hall, and participate in activities and events on campus.

Course Requirements

Required Supplies

Please know that any supply purchases are not included in the overall tuition fee. Students will need to budget for additional course supplies, textbooks, supply kits, etc.

It would be beneficial for students to have their own laptops to work on their portfolios outside of class.

Textbooks are not required for this class. Students will be provided with relevant information via the learning management system for the students to read and watch.

Tentative Schedule

The AM and PM sessions would be a mixture of lectures, guest speakers, group activities, portfolio development, and working on a final project.

End Event

There will be an end event open to parents and other guests at the end of this class.


Faculty Bio

Keonte Coleman

Keonte Coleman, PhD, a former news producer, is an assistant professor at the S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications in the Broadcast & Digital Journalism Department at Syracuse University. Dr. Coleman teaches courses in broadcast journalism, DEI (diversity, equity, and inclusion) in the media and sports media. Coleman earned multiple Emmy Awards as a television news producer. He is co-author of a news producing textbook, “Complete Guide to Television, Field, and Digital Producing.” Coleman has combined his interests to create and host a YouTube Podcast show, “Breaking News with Media Leaders,” which aims to help students, faculty and professionals advance or pivot in their careers by getting advice from academic and professional media leaders.
