Course Overview

This course explores the complex dynamics of narcissism and its impact on individuals and relationships, particularly focusing on developmental trauma caused by narcissistic abuse. Through psychological theories and case studies, students will learn to identify the signs of narcissism and understand the emotional, mental, and physical effects of trauma on victims. The course covers recovery strategies and therapeutic approaches to promote healing and personal growth. Designed for individuals seeking to deepen their knowledge of narcissism and trauma, this course is beneficial for students interested in psychology and social work and those personally affected by narcissistic behavior.

All students who successfully complete the course will receive a Certificate of Completion and have the opportunity to request a Syracuse University noncredit transcript.

Faculty Bio

Kristy Lee Parkin

Dr. Kristy Lee Dracker Parkin holds a PhD in Psychology with a diverse background in funeral services, lifelong education, business administration, and social justice advocacy. She has served as a funeral director, adjunct instructor at Syracuse University and preschool teacher, and is now a Director in Training for Learning Care Group. Dr. Parkin’s personal experiences have deeply influenced her professional work. Her research has primarily focused on posttraumatic growth and narcissistic conflict and its impact on child development. Additionally, she has firsthand experience with the trauma of family court as well as Veteran mental health and substance abuse, which further informs her advocacy and support efforts.
