Course Overview
Provides a broad, fundamental introduction to the U.S. healthcare industry, including historical and contemporary challenges in the delivery of healthcare. Audience: The course is designed for students interested in health care administration and the challenges in the delivery of U.S. healthcare
All students who successfully complete the course will receive a Certificate of Completion and have the opportunity to request a Syracuse University credit transcript.
Learning Objectives
After taking this course, students will be able to:
- Describe the evolution of funding the U.S. healthcare system
- Debate the role of government in the U.S. healthcare system
- Appraise the challenges related to recruiting, retaining, and allocating healthcare labor to maximize efficient and effective healthcare
- Examine various views on what constitutes effective public and clinical health services
- Examine proposed solutions to problems of the U.S. healthcare system

Student Expectations

Faculty Bios
Bhavneet Walia

Bhavneet Walia is an Associate Professor of Public Health at Syracuse University, Senior Research Associate Faculty in the Center for Policy Research, Maxwell School and Research affiliate, Lerner Center for Public Health Promotion. Bhavneet is an applied health and labor econometrician. Her research interests are in the areas of healthcare efficiency (including markets for healthcare workers), maternal-child health, disability research and sports epidemiology. She teaches undergraduate and graduate Public Health courses in secondary public health data analysis and healthcare management. Along with teaching, Bhavneet has mentored several students who were awarded an SU SOURCE research grant for their research projects.
