Course Overview

This class is an exploration of sports reporting/performance and production concentrating on sports journalism and utilizing basic and intermediate-level technologies. This course is designed to prepare students for the real world of sports broadcasting. 

We will take the building blocks of writing and delivery, work up to play-by-play with stops at talk shows and other reporting. We will learn in this class by discussing various aspects of sportscasting, practicing them in simulations, getting feedback and improving through repetition. We will study storytelling in sports.

The reason why we love sports and millions of viewers tune in to watch their favorite athletes; why we cheer, cry, compete and care.

All students who successfully complete the course will receive a Certificate of Completion and have the opportunity to request a Syracuse University noncredit transcript.

Faculty Bios

Olivia Stomski

In addition to being part of the Newhouse School faculty, Olivia Stomski is an executive producer at ProAngle Media in Los Angeles. She oversees, manages, produces and directs over 100 live events a year across the country, leads the production team and works with executives and personnel from several networks and professional collegiate teams.

Stomski also held various editing and producing positions at Fox Sports Net. An alumna of the Newhouse School, she is an Emmy and Telly Award winner. 

Matt Park

Voice of the Orange, Matt Park ’97, joined the Syracuse Sports Network in 2002 and became the play-by-play voice of the football and men’s basketball teams and host of their coaches’s shows in July 2004. The native of Chittenango, N.Y., has also broadcast professional baseball since 1996, including stints in Syracuse, Rochester, Binghamton, Auburn and a fill-in assignment with the San Diego Padres.

He also owns two years of college football experience on CSS-TV and was the voice of the UNC Greensboro men’s basketball team for two campaigns.

Park is an adjunct professor at SU’s Newhouse School of Public Communications and created the Sportscaster U. program, working with professional athletes transitioning to broadcasting.
