Course Overview

​​Media and Culture explores the rapidly growing world of e-sports and traces the historical roots of competitive video games to the contemporary scene’s multibillion-dollar industry. E-sports are examined through multiple lenses to understand the many ways in which e-sports intersect with media and broadcasting.

The history, technologies, and business models behind e-sports are discussed, along with the roles of teams, leagues, and broadcast platforms.​

All students who successfully complete the course will receive a Certificate of Completion and have the opportunity to request a Syracuse University noncredit transcript.

Summer College – Online: Explore college life before stepping foot on campus! High school students can enroll in a college-level course, pursue their academic interests, and meet likeminded students in daily virtual events and activities.

  • A space conducive to taking an online class (without distractions)

Student Expectations

To pass this course, students must regularly attend synchronous classes on time, participate in class discussions, and complete in-class and at-home assignments. Students are also expected to give each other feedback on in-class virtual workshops, and participate in the final student reading.

It is the student’s responsibility to inform the instructors if they must miss a synchronous class session due to health concerns, religious observances, or other obligations.

Students must attend live synchronous online sessions Monday – Thursday, 6-8 p.m. ET.

Faculty Bios

Olivia Stomski

In addition to being part of the Newhouse School faculty, Olivia Stomski is an executive producer at ProAngle Media in Los Angeles. She oversees, manages, produces and directs over 100 live events a year across the country, leads the production team and works with executives and personnel from several networks and professional collegiate teams.

Stomski also held various editing and producing positions at Fox Sports Net. An alumna of the Newhouse School, she is an Emmy and Telly Award winner.
